Church Furniture Causes Church Growth
According to ChristiaNet Blog (www.christiannet.com)
HOUSTON, TX -- (MARKET WIRE) -- January 11, 2007 -- ChristiaNet.com (http://www.christianet.com), the world's
largest Christian portal with twelve million monthly page loads, conducted recent research to find out if readers felt that
church furniture could have an impact on church growth. One reader said, "Furniture does not make a church grow, the
Holy Spirit does." However, many readers seem to agree that when the pews are padded and comfortable it could very
well encourage people to attend services especially if there are people attending who have difficulty sitting comfortably.
President Bill Cooper of ChristiaNet commented, "Church furniture can make a difference to a visitor who views the
surroundings as inviting and comfortable." Having a positive experience will encourage visitors to return. Church
growth can mean different things to different people but most Christians will most likely agree that being able to sit on
comfortable furniture helps them to focus on the service because they are thinking less about themselves and more
about what is being said.
Some Believers attend services for the fellowship and to study God's Word and aren't concerned with the decor. One
reader stated, "Making the flesh comfortable has nothing to do with convicting the heart and bringing it to repentance."
Another reader commented that church furniture isn't the reason for church growth in large churches where the
teaching is "sugar-coating God's Word" and leaving out the message that causes sinners to repent. This reader feels
that many pastors are telling the congregation what they want to hear instead of the message of God's Word that
would change their lives, the revelation of truth that sets people free by being obedient and faithful to the Lord.
People do visit beautiful buildings but the point could be made that what brings them back is not the design or the
ornamentation but the welcoming atmosphere inside with the worship setting. The interior should be properly
maintained not only with chairs, pews, or nursery furniture that is appropriate but also with fresh paint and plumbing
that works. Churches need to anticipate the needs of the congregation in every way possible. The atmosphere should
include the proper temperature and lighting as well as anticipating the needs of those who are handicapped or suffer
with back problems.
Church pew design will add a personalized touch to any sanctuary's decor, be it a country chapel or an elegant
cathedral.scroll work chapel may incorporate simple wooden seating with no cushioning while an elegant cathedral
may boast elaborate pews with detailed scroll work and velvety cushioned seats. Companies that provide church pew
construction will design pews to correlate with the church's style and budget.
To begin the process, a church will first have to determine how many pews will be purchased. Typically, fewer
sections of longer pews is the less expensive alternative since pew ends require large pieces of wood and tend to be
more labor intensive due to the detail that is involved in the church pew design; therefore, the more ends, the more
costly the project. The budget must be determined before any selections are made to avoid confusion and keep
choices realistic.
The second phase involves considering the type of wood and color of stain that best matches the color scheme.
Carpenters can utilize oak, pine, maple, cherry, walnut, or even mahogany for church pew construction. Some of these
woods are much more expensive than others. Buyers must be aware of both the price and the quality of the wood that
is chosen for the church pew design. Stains vary in both hue and sheen, light to dark and matte to shiny. Stain should
be chosen based on the style of the seating.
Hundreds of amazing styles of ends are available, from Gothic to colonial, Celtic to Centurion. Certain styles, such as
the Colonial, display a beautiful white-finished fiberboard offset by a deeper cherry or walnut wood cap and base.
Although traditional churches often prefer these more detailed styles, many modern churches prefer economy style
pews. The economy church pew construction allows for easy accessibility because it has shorter ends which allow
attendees to slide directly into pews rather than having to step around the end. Jeremiah 29:11 says "For I know the
thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end."
The next step in the process is designing the style of the "body". If padding will be used for the back and/or cushioning
for seat, the thickness of this padding must also be determined as well as what type of fabric will work best with the
church pew construction. When choosing a fabric, consider a neutral color that matches the decor. Be certain to
choose a fabric that "breathes" and is pleasant to the touch. The goal of a church pew design is for the congregation to
enjoy their time in the church as they gather to worship God!
