New Life for Old Pews

Even though it's no small undertaking, repairing, refinishing, or reupholstering pews can be more cost effective than
replacing them with new pews or other forms of seating. If the pews in your church are showing their age, consider
giving them a face lift. Here are a few options.
A New Look
For pews that are structurally sound but showing years of use, the first option is to have them refinished. You will need
to remove the pews and ship them to a refinishing company. Decide with the refinisher if all the pews will be removed
at once, or if the job will be done in several batches. While the pews are off site, set rented chairs in place so that
worship services can proceed as usual.
At the refinishers, the old varnish and stain are removed and the wood sanded to a smooth finish. Repairs are made
as needed. New stain and varnish will return the pews to a brand-new appearance. This is a great opportunity to
select a finish that matches any color and decor changes made to the sanctuary over the years.
A New Comfort
If lack of seating comfort keeps visitors from returning, one option is to add loose, reversible cushions made to match
your pews and décor. A second option is to have the seats or seats and backs cushioned and fully upholstered. A third
option is to get custom-fitted cushions. These cushions are upholstered over a plywood base and made to exactly fit
the existing contour of the seat. Some might need to be secured in place, others are held in place just by fit.
Of course, pews that are cushioned and upholstered will occasionally need to be reupholstered. Most likely, by the
time the fabric wears, the cushions will need to be replaced, too.
Unfortunately, some pews are beyond repair. Churches looking for new pews will be happy to know the pew
manufacturing business is alive and well even in the world of contemporary worship, and some well-established
companies stand ready to help.
